Sephera (The Water Ascendant)
The source of all life is water.
The Losarth River gently encircles Carano like a blue ribbon, sustaining this border city. A large statue of the legendary wizard Sephera, who founded the Magister Council, served as Archmagister of the Academy, and was alone responsible for the Miracle of Losarth, is situated in the center of the river.
The mage retainer of Sephera’s household gave her her first experience with magic.
A retainer mage is a common practice among lords, who sponsor and support them in return for the ward’s and the estate’s security. In addition to being in charge of handling any matters pertaining to the supernatural or arcane, a family’s mage retainer also serves as a reflection of the status and wealth of the family as a whole.
Children with a gift for magic are frequently sent to train with mages; after completing their studies, they may even assume their master’s role and become the new guardian of their family. Sephera stood out among these already gifted individuals.
She had an inherent understanding of the arcane from an early age, quickly outpacing her master. She was also a devoted member of the Temple, frequently participating in its humanitarian and religious endeavors, and she would have joined the Temple if it weren’t for her responsibility to her own family.
According to Scunthor, the First Mage, the first magic originated from the gods and was transmitted to humans by the demi-gods in the Primal Era, becoming the mortal expression of the immortal divine that humans have been permitted to use. The uninitiated may find Sephera’s dual roles as an apprentice mage and a devout believer to be in conflict.
The Temple therefore extended a warm welcome to Sephera. The Temple was eager to draw believers after suffering tremendously during the First Invasion, especially one as potent as Sephera. The interests of the noble class and the mages who served them, however, were inherently at odds with the Temple’s revival. With a mage’s staff in one hand and a lesson from the Temple in the other, Sephera was trapped between the two.
The War of Purification upset this fragile balance. In the name of knowledge, far too many mages had been permitted to carry out cruel dark magic experiments. The Temple’s revelation of them caused the populace to turn against black magic. Being a well-known mage already, Sephera entered the conflict alongside distinguished allies like Dirak and Dolsey, forming the forefront of the fight against dark magic.
But as the fighting continued, more and more factions were involved. Younger houses developed and attempted to take advantage, extending the battle for their own purposes as a result of the old nobles’ involvement in the conflict as a result of their connections to dark magicians. At the frontlines, Sephera noticed that things were getting out of hand and attempted to be a voice of calm, but before she could come up with a strategy, she discovered her colleague Dolsey caught up in the fighting.
Sephera used her family’s connections to try to enlist the aid of the Temple in order to assist Dolsey and other defenseless mages and to return the movement to its original goals. But too many Temple members had too much on the line in this conflict; they were allied with the new houses and stood to gain far too much from the downfall of the old nobility and the wizards. Now was not the time to stop.
Why do I remain in the shadows despite believing in the light? Sephera questioned herself in the face of the Temple’s disregard. She started to comprehend why Dirak and Dolsey, despite agreeing with her on so many other issues, were so frightened of her beliefs.
Sephera is a magician, though. She uses magic when there is no justice. Sephera helped many innocent magicians by working with Dirak and her other allies to preserve their lives. An organization that initially opposed black magic now finds itself at odds with the new houses.
Sephera and her comrades eventually forced to flee to the borderlands where they were safe from the grasp of the aristocracy. Due to necessity or out of a sense of duty, many wizards joined them. This was the foundation of the Magister Council, established at Carano.
The Council changed the sleepy village of Carano by erecting massive towers that reach the sky and inviting all the mages who previously had to engage in solitary combat to band together and defend their way of life. Since then, Sephera, the city’s founder and leader, has defended it, just as the river she built does.
Those who have enormous power are obligated to defend those who do not.
