How teams can advance to the Grand Finals in the tournament format

There will be 48 total matches in the AWC 2021 Group Stage, and they will all be broadcast on 8 dates from June 19 to June 27. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages after the Group Stage matches, which will be contested in a double round robin style. All games will be played in a Best-of-2 (BO2) style, where a score of 2-0 will award the winning team three points, the loser team none, and a score of 1-1 will award each team one point. In order to improve strategy and selection diversity for the teams, the global ban-pick rule will also be in force.

The Quarterfinals (which will take place from June 30 to July 4) and Semifinals make up the knockout stages (from 10 July to 11 July). The games will take place in a double elimination style, where a team can only be eliminated after suffering two losses. The losing team will move down to the losers’ bracket where they will face another team that has previously lost. The Best-of-5 (BO5) format will be used for both the first round of the Quarterfinals and the first round of the losers bracket. All subsequent games will use a Best-of-Seven (BO7) format. On July 18, the Grand Final, in which the winner will be declared the World Champion, will include two teams.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand (MOTS) and the Sports Authority of Thailand will collaborate for the first time globally on the AWC 2021 as partners with Garena Thailand (SAT). The MOTS and SAT have played a crucial role in Garena Thailand’s efforts to promote and regulate the local esports scene as official partners of Garena Thailand. This international partnership is a significant step toward gaining government recognition for the esports sector.
